The Recent Rise of Campus Celebrities

With everyone heading back to school this fall, the question in most people’s heads is who will they see on their walk to class or in their class. A lot of times you run into the same person over and over. People have their hallway crushes and their campus celebrities. Some people’s campus celebrities are just people they run into all the time, or someone that their friend group have deemed a “celebrity” at their school, due to fascination or attractiveness. Some colleges, however, have actual celebrities who can be seen walking around, at football games, and in classes. Many actors, singers, and athletes have gotten their fame and decided to go back to school, or are waiting for a draft to pick them up while attending a university.

When thinking of actors, one of the most popular of the summer seems to be Glen Powell. The star of “Twisters” and “Top Gun: Maverick,” decided to head back to University of Texas at Austin to finish up his degree. Although he doesn’t sit in on classes, he could be seen at the college’s first football game of the year against Colorado State University on Saturday, Aug. 31st. While students might not have a class with Powell or see him around the school, they still can look forward to seeing their own campus celebrity at sporting events.

At the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA), students might catch a glimpse of Noah Miller. Best known on TikTok as @nmillz1, the twenty-one-year-old UCLA student would post many videos showing a day in his life at college. He expresses in some of his TikToks that he will pass high schoolers who are going on campus tours, on his way to class and will often get asked to take pictures. Miller also said that sometimes tour guides will include him in the list of famous people who attend UCLA, but he feels like a normal student, and doesn’t feel like it is fitting. If you are attending class at UCLA, keep a look out for Noah Miller, you might catch him on the way to class, or even sitting next to you.

University of Southern California (USC), also has its fair share of campus celebrities. The “Euphoria” star and Emmy winner, Storm Reid is one celebrity that you might catch on your walk to class or in your theater class since she is currently studying drama/theater. Another celebrity you may have seen in a class or at a USC football game is Olivia Rodrigo. The singer-songwriter took an in-person poetry class at USC, which she said really helped with her songwriting. She could also be seen at the USC vs UCLA football game last year cheering in front of the USC student section, before being drafted into the NBA in 2024 to play with the Los Angeles Lakers, LeBron Raymone “Bronny” James Jr. was a common face for USC students to see throughout campus. The basketball star and son of LeBron James was a campus celebrity that many USC students would have in their classes, and see on the basketball court on game days. Long story, short, if you are at USC, expect to see many famous faces around campus.

Whether your school has actual celebrities or just people that you and your friends have made celebrities, it's always fun to see a face you recognize and look up to. With the 2024-25 school year just beginning, who knows what other celebrities you might see on campus?
